Birdy Nam Nam is an award winning group of French DJs who create tracks entirely from vinyl samples, much like my all time favorites, and their recently released Defiant Order LP is filled with moments of splendor. “Defiant Order” is also my favorite tune on the album, with its Kraftwerk-era analog synths manipulated frenetically across a slower french house beat. This is definitely one of those albums you have to snag on vinyl.

Avalanches Reissue/Stereolab Remix

In preparation for the the release of the limited edition, 10-year anniversary reissue of Since I Left You, Modular has disseminated Stereolab‘s remix of The Avalanches‘ Since I Left You. The reissue will include an entire disc of unreleased material, as well as remixes from the likes of El Guincho, MF Doom, and others. With some uncertainty surrounding the pending release of The Avalanches‘ next full album, this will have to keep fans satiated until further news unfolds.

After a string of successful releases on Alex Chase’s One Handed Music, Bullion‘s You Drive Me To Plastic, his first foray on Young Turks, is an exciting work of exploration. The Non-LP unfolds like a stream of consciousness, guiding the listener through an eclectic microcosm of rhythms and samples that fall more in line with works by The Avalanches and Quiet Village than anything he’s done before. Few tracks adhere to a formal structure, which provides Bullion with a brief, but unique, environment to flex his intelligence. The statement of releasing this material as a Non-LP is also thought-provoking, and I believe You Drive Me To Plastic will serve primarily as a reference point throughout his bright and promising future. I first discovered Gothenburg, Sweden’s The Embassy way back in ’03, when most of my time was spent searching for anything that sounded similar to The Avalanches. Their lush, balearic sound is just starting to catch on everywhere else, but their early releases on Service will always resonate the most with me. It Never Entered My Mind is still one of my favorite songs of all time. I suggest you buy anything you can find on their website.

These have been very good months for D.I.D. favorites Teams and Star Slinger, whose works can be found just about everywhere these days. Hold Me, one of their latest collaborations, sounds like it would have been on some kind of Madlib vs. The Avalanches rework that never saw the light of day. It’s easy to understand why these guys have been getting so much love as of late, and I can only imagine what what we’ll be hearing from them in the next couple of months.

ALBUM: Patrick Lee – “The Last Thing”

My first exposure to Patrick Lee was through the track “Quittin’ Time” which he emailed to me a few months ago. I was instantly hypnotized and found myself listening to it on repeat on soundcloud, longing for more. I got my hands on the whole album, The Last Thing, and as I am known to do, got distracted, and only had the chance to give it the proper listening session it deserved a few weeks ago. So now, after much delay, I am here to tell you exactly why it was worth the (self-imposed) wait. This is an album made up essentially of beats, his influences come from blues, rock, jazz and more and form this brilliantly eclectic hodgepodge that in my opinion, could all fall under the umbrella of hip-hop. For me these tracks have a certain familiarity about them, featuring Avalanches-esque samples, and moments reminiscent of Damu the Fudgemunk, if you’re into dope beats that flow oh-so-smoothly, then this is the album for you. Wax Tailor is the alias of hip hop producer Jean-Christophe Le Saoût. Hailing from Paris, his three alb ums are filled with intelligent samples and exceptional beats. Tales Of The Forgotten Melodies is one of my favorite albums of all time. Growing up on Dj Shadow/RJD2/The Avalanches, this was a real find in my final semester of College. He’s still touring from his latest release, In The Mood For Life, and will hopefully be releasing more material soon.

Pitchfork has received news that The Avalanches have enlisted Ariel Pink to record some vocals for their upcoming album, which should definitely be out by the end of the year. This is the best news I’ve heard all year. I can’t even begin to imagine how good this album is going to sound.
